Welcome to Nursery!
In St Peter’s nursery there are 26 part time places which are filled during three intakes throughout the school year. Children start in nursery in the term after their third birthday and stay with us until they are ready to move onto Reception.
In nursery we follow the Early Years curriculum which focuses on seven areas of learning;
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
- Communication and Language
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Art and Design
Our curriculum is led by the children’s interests and abilities and each child is encouraged and supported to work to their individual ability. As well as activities based on the more academic areas we also focus on social skills, including how to share and play together, and physical skills such as getting changed for and after PE. Children often lead their own learning through their play-based learning and they work one to one with adults on activities focused on the teacher led lesson of the day.
Our teaching and learning is based around different topics from the Cornerstones scheme such as why do you love me so much, where does snow go and how many colours are there in a rainbow? Each topic is started with a WOW day to engage children and the topics can be enhanced by visits in school and trips out. Our learning takes place both indoors in the classroom and outdoors in our outside classroom which contains a playground and a large grassed area.
Our current topic is: Why do leaves go crispy?
Religious Education is a very important part of everything we do in nursery. We have focused RE lessons and activities and children have opportunities to participate in whole school assemblies and masses. They also lead class assemblies in front of the whole school and acts of collective worship within the nursery classroom. Nursery’s achievements are celebrated during a whole school weekly congratulations assembly. We enjoy learning about different faiths and festivals such as Diwali and Chinese New Year.
PE takes place every Monday. Please can you ensure all jewellery is removed on this day. Thank you.
Your child will be given a reading folder which will contain key rings with sounds, numbers, shapes and colours on. It is important to practise these with your child as it will help to secure their learning at Nursery. Please return this folder every Monday.
Every half term we will also set an activity based around our current topic for you to complete alongside your child. Sometimes this may be making things to share with the class, nature walks or simply bringing in pictures and images of their home life. We strongly encourage these activities as it enables us to work alongside you in order to have a full insight into your child's holistic development. Thank you.
