Welcome to Year 5!
In our class we are working on how to be grateful and generous children!
Numeracy lessons begin with Big Maths where children work in small groups to develop their speed and accuracy of mental maths. They work in ability groups across each Key Stage and try to beat their score every Friday in their Big Maths ‘Beat That’ tests.
Throughout the year children will cover a range of maths aspects and skills
- Place value
- Mental and formal methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- Fractions, decimals and percentages
We will also have a big emphasis on problem solving and children using their reasoning skills to explain how they solved a question.
Please ensure children learn and practice their times tables as they are an important aspect in many areas of maths.
During Year 5 children will be looking at a series of different spelling patterns, word endings, prefixes and suffixes. There is also a list of National Curriculum words that children need to learn and understand so that they can use them in their writing.
Throughout the year, children will be exposed to a wide range of text types and genres linked to our topic which provide a great writing stimulus.
Some of these include:
- Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
- The Ride roller coaster poem
- Kensuke's Kingdom
- Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them
- The Piano
- Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Don't forget to continue reading at home so that you can quiz and get 100%.
Throughout the year children will cover various units in RE. These include: Creation, Miracles and Sacrament of the Sick, Advent, Christmas, Baptism, Parables and Sayings of Jesus, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, The Work of the Apostles and Marriage and Holy Orders.
Year 5 will be learning about a range of exciting topics this year which will allow children to improve their science, history, geography, art and design, music and computing skills.
Our topics for this year will be: Time Traveller, Scream Machine, Pharaoh's, Beast Creator, Off With Her Head and Allotment.
lease have your correct PE kit in school (also outdoor PE Kit nearer the winter) between Monday and Friday so that you have appropriate clothing for your PE lessons.
Reading books need to be in school everyday so that you can quiz once you have finished the book. Remember: the more 100%'s you get, the more chance you have at winning!
Homework is given every Friday and folders need to be returned the following week by Thursday at the latest. Weekly homework consists of:
- Big Maths practice sheet
- Spelling practice sheet
- Accessing the Times Tables Rockstars App
